REHABILITATION SERVICES
The mission of the
Rehabilitation Services Department of Huggins Hospital is to provide a
comprehensive interdisciplinary team approach to the treatment and education
of each patient. The department staff strives to provide quality,
compassionate and holistic treatment to all patients. At Huggins Hospital,
we provide superior rehabilitation services to improve the health status of

PHYSICAL THERAPY SERVICE
The Physical Therapists at Huggins Hospital care for inpatient and
outpatients of all ages who have medical problems or other health-related
conditions that limit their abilities to perform functional activities in
their daily lives. Our therapists are specialized in different functional
areas such as aquatic rehab, sports specific functional training, woman’s
health, cranio-sacral therapy and lymphatic drainage. Therapists are
educated in orthopedics, neurology, various medical conditions, areas of
cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation and kinesiology.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
SERVICE
The Occupational Therapists at Huggins Hospital care for inpatients and
outpatients of all ages that have limitations in necessary activities of
daily living as a result of many acute or chronic medical conditions,
including fibromyalgia. One may be referred to an Occupational
Therapist for Hand Therapy if a hand injury such as a crush,
dismemberment, burn, or overuse injury such as carpel tunnel syndrome
occurs. Other specialty areas include Wound Care, Custom Hand Splinting,
Edema Management, Strengthening, Range of Motion exercises and Scar
Management. Occupational Therapy may address a Neurological diagnosis,
such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke or traumatic head
injury. Treatment may include activities to improve your arm and hand
coordination, adaptive equipment training, home safety, self care retraining
and caregiver training.

COMMUNICATION AND
SWALLOWING DISORDER SERVICE
The Speech Therapists/Pathologists at Huggins Hospital can provide a full
range of speech/language pathology services aimed at improving a patient’s
communication, cognitive linguistic skills, and swallowing abilities.
Certified therapists conduct a thorough evaluation and develop an
appropriate treatment incorporating patient and family education components
with necessary follow-up services. Other programs may include, Dysphagia
(swallowing) Evaluation & Treatment, whereby the Speech
Pathologist will evaluate the swallowing and or eating difficulties to
determine the type, extent and severity of the patient’s disorder.
Pediatrics Services provide comprehensive services for children from
birth through school age with a variety of conditions caused by
developmental diagnoses or traumatic injuries. Our professionals use fun
and innovative approaches to maximize the child’s development. A therapist
may confer with area schools based on need to provide
Reading/Writing Disability Services.

CARDIAC AND PULMONARY
REHABILITATION PROGRAM
Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
are performed as an outpatient service at Huggins Hospital in the Medical Arts Building. These
are exercise performance and educational programs designed to provide support to the cardiac and pulmonary patient. The programs require a referral from a
physician. Our cardiac & pulmonary rehabilitation team includes a
physician, registered nurse, physical therapist & exercise specialists. The
programs provide individual supervised and monitored telemetry, blood
pressure and heart rate prior to the exercise session as well as during, and
after cool down. Cardiac Exercise sessions are held at 9:00am,
11:00am, and 1:00pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Pulmonary exercise
sessions are held Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30-3:30pm. Educational
classes are offered on Wednesdays at 10:00am to discuss important topics
such as, Anatomy & Physiology of the Heart, Cardiac/Pulmonary Medications,
Health Behaviors, Stress Management, Nutrition, Smoking Cessation and
Breathing Techniques.

BACK BAY REHABILITATION
Huggins Hospital opened the doors of Back Bay Rehab in December 2003 as an additional location for out patient rehabilitation.
Our staff includes experienced physical, occupational, and massage
therapists, as well as an athletic trainer. Our administrative staff is
dedicated to supporting our patients, clients, and rehabilitation team.
Programs offered at Back
Bay Rehabilitation:
Adolescent Sports Clinic:
Wolfeboro Pediatrics and
the local Family Practitioners are coordinating their effort with Back Bay
Rehabilitation to treat Middle School Athletes in a 24-48 hour time period
following an injury. Call your physician for an initial appointment and
from there your child will be referred to Back Bay Rehab for an evaluation &
treatment.
Athletic Training Program: This program brings fast and efficient care to the
athletes at Kingswood Regional High School in various forms including
on-site evaluations, treatment, and possible referral to the Emergency Room,
Physician and/or Physical Therapy.
Aquatic Rehabilitation Program: Aquatic Therapy is specifically designed for patients who
are unable to tolerate exercise on land. Our pool is a therapeutic pool
with a water temperature of 92 degrees. The waters components, such as,
buoyancy, viscosity, and hydrodynamics are helpful in joint range of motion,
swelling, and weakness. Special Classes include: Senior Class-Tuesday and
Thursday 12:00pm to 1:00pm. Water Exercise/Aerobics Class – Tuesday and
Thursday 4:30pm to 5:30pm and 6:00pm to 7:00pm.
Balance and Vestibular (dizziness/vertigo) Program:
Balance is an essential part of independence and activities of daily
living. Falls can complicate an individual’s health status as well as the
opportunity to live in their home. We have the latest technological
equipment designed to improve functional balance and staff trained
specifically in its use.
Fitness for Life Program: Our state of the art gym is the location of this program.
The program is designed for the individual who benefits from some
supervision and direction in the development and advancement of an exercise
program. Classes are held Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:00am-10:00am, and
Tuesday at 5:30pm. No prescription is necessary to participate.
Golf Enhancement Program:
Golf requires balance, coordination, flexibility and
strength. This program identifies and improves faulty movements that lead
to poor shots or back injury.
Handicapped Ski
Program: Double Diamond is a ski program for the functionally challenged
individual with a desire to live life to it’s fullest by physically
challenging themselves while having fun. Hosted at KING PINE SKI AREA, East

Massage Therapy Program:
Massage Therapy includes Deep Tissue Massage, Acupressure, Trigger Point
Release, and Neuromuscular techniques, Heated Stone Massage.
Therapeutic Women’s Health Program:
Pelvic floor weakness can lead to a number of uncomfortable issues for women
and men. This program treats the following diagnoses with exercise,
bio-feedback and education: Urinary Incontinence, Urinary
Frequency-Interstitial Cystititis, Pelvic Pain, Dyspareunia, Nerve
Entrapment, Pelvic Floor Weakness & Hypertonus and Post Partum
Pain/Weakness.
