BILLING, INSURANCE & COST
Huggins Hospital, in partnership with the New Hampshire Hospital Association (NHHA), is committed to promoting greater transparency around healthcare costs, as well as a better understanding of hospital pricing and billing.
Cost estimates for medical procedures are complex, but we are committed to helping you through the process. To get essential information on cost estimates for procedures and services, call 603.569.7547 to speak with one of our PATH Specialists in Central Scheduling or find more information about healthcare costs on this page.
YOUR HOSPITAL BILL
Your bill reflects all of the services ordered by your physician and received during your stay. Charges fall into two categories:
- A basic daily rate, which includes your room, meals, nursing care, housekeeping, etc.
- Charges for special services, which include items your physician orders for you such as x-rays or laboratory tests.
If you have certain tests or treatments while in the hospital, you may receive separate bills for services provided to you by your attending phyicians, radiologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists, ER physicians, cardiologists and other specialists. These bills are for professional services rendered by these doctors in diagnosing and interpreting test results while you were a patient.
If you have questions about these bills, please call our Patient Business Services Department at: 603.569.7684.
Below are a few other organizations that may send you a bill after you receive care at Huggins Hospital. If you have questions about these bills, please use the phone number listed with the organization below:

Huggins Hospital will treat anyone regardless of their ability to pay or their insurance situation. Huggins Hospital participates in Medicare, some Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicaid, AARP, Anthem, Cigna, Harvard Pilgrim (excluding ElevateHealth), UHC and most private health insurance plans. Insurance coverage can vary depending on the carrier so we recommend patients familiarize themselves with their coverage and ask questions before treatment. If You Are a Member of an HMO or PPO
Insurance plans may have special requirements, such as a second surgical opinion or pre-certification for certain tests or procedures. It is a patient's responsibility to make sure the plan's requirements have been met. If a plan’s requirements are not followed, patients may be financially responsible for all or part of the services rendered in the hospital. Some physician specialists may not participate in certain healthcare plans and their services may not be covered.
IF YOU ARE COVERED BY MEDICARE OR MEDICAID
For patients covered by Medicare or Medicaid, please provide your Medicare or Medicaid card.
If you are a Medicare patient, you will be asked a series of questions regarding your status including other insurance you may have and your retirement. These questions are required by law and must be asked each time you visit us. If you are covered by Medicare, we will submit your claims to Medicare on your behalf. We are required by Medicare to provide only those services approved by Medicare as deemed medically necessary. In the event the service is not covered by Medicare, we may ask you to sign an Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN). Additionally, we will bill you and/or your supplemental insurance carrier for services not covered by Medicare such as self-administered medications and routine health exams. However, if neither covers these services, you will be responsible for payment for these services.
IF YOU HAVE NO INSURANCE
If you do not have medical insurance, a member of our Financial Assistance Team can discuss financial arrangements with you. Please call 603.569.7684 to discuss options available to you.
- The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has options for people who either pay too much for health insurance or do not have health insurance coverage. Information on the Health Insurance Marketplace is available by:

Hospitals are now required to display their charges on their websites in a certain format. Standard charges shown in the chargemaster do not necessarily reflect what a patient ultimately pays for services and therefore may not be a helpful tool to estimate out-of-pocket responsibility or to compare hospital costs. Because the chargemaster rates are updated periodically, please contact our PATH Specialists at 603.569.7547 for information about the cost of your care. The information provided is a comprehensive list of charges for each inpatient and outpatient service or item provided by a hospital, also known as a chargemaster, which Huggins Hospital will post on an annual basis.
Please Note: The charges listed are based on care without complications. Actual charges may be different for specific patients due to medical condition, length of time spent in surgery or recovery, necessary specific equipment, supplies or medication, complications requiring unanticipated procedures, or other treatment ordered by the physician.
You can view our chargemaster here.
If you have health insurance, you will only need to pay your deductible, copay and/or coinsurance. You can contact your insurance provider by calling the telephone number on the back of your health insurance member card or by visiting their website.
After your discharge, you will receive a hospital bill for services and care you received from the hospital during your procedure or stay. You may receive separate bills from your own physician, or from other physicians that provided care/services during your procedure or hospital stay (surgical, anesthesia, pathology, radiology, etc.).
Self Pay: Huggins Hospital offers a 50% discount for self-pay patients (patients with no insurance).
Prompt Pay: Huggins Hospital will offer a 30% prompt pay discount to those who pay their bill in full within 30 days. This applies to self-pay accounts and self-pay balances after insurance.
If you would like to pay your bill online, please log in to your Patient Portal or you can call to pay your bill at 603.569.7572.
